Bank Online Assessments and Video Interviews: What Four US Banks Publish

Bank online assessment guide: what JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Capital One publish on tests and video interviews.

Candidates who search for "bank online assessment" usually expect one standard test, and what they find instead is that each bank screens differently for each role. A technology applicant may be sent a coding test while a student applying to the same employer is asked to record video answers.

We wrote this for people who have applied to JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo or Capital One, or are about to, and want to know what each bank itself says about screening. It covers the hiring stages each bank publishes, the assessments and recorded video interviews it describes, the preparation material it offers, and anything it says about AI or outside help. We make Verve AI, an interview copilot, and what we say about the four banks comes from their own careers pages as they stood in October 2026.

The short answer is that all four banks say assessments apply to some roles and not others. JPMorgan Chase is the only one of the four with a written line on AI during interviews.

Why does a bank online assessment vary so much by role?

Banks hire for branches, trading floors and engineering teams, so their careers pages describe screening in general terms. None of the four banks publishes a pass mark, and most leave vendor names, timings and deadlines to the invitation email. Where a detail is missing below, the bank does not publish it.

What does JPMorgan Chase publish about assessments and recorded interviews?

JPMorgan Chase's how we hire page lists four stages, which are explore, apply, interview and decision.

Its hiring FAQ says you will be notified if your role requires an assessment. It gives three examples of the assessments it uses: structured live interviews, on-demand or recorded interviews, and virtual skills assessments. The recorded interview is used "to evaluate your skills such as language proficiency, verbal presentation and/or technical abilities", on a laptop, desktop or mobile device with a camera and microphone, within a designated timeframe. For some roles there is also a technical assessment, which may be an online test or a live technical interview.

The bank's digital handbook for early careers candidates is more specific. It describes two rounds, and the first is a "recorded virtual interview hosted over HireVue and/or HackerRank (technology only)." The second round consists of one or more interviews held virtually or in person, depending on the program. The pages we read do not describe a game-based assessment.

The handbook also contains the bank's guidance on AI. It suggests prompting an LLM to generate practice questions before the interview. Among its interview don'ts, it lists "Use software to generate answers while you are interviewing, unless you are invited to use an LLM as part of the interview or exercise." It also tells candidates not to read from notes or pre-written documents during the interview.

What does Bank of America publish about assessments and video interviews?

Bank of America's hiring process page lists four stages: find the role, apply, interview and offer. It says that in the interview stage you "may also be asked to complete exercises and assessments to measure key aptitudes and values."

Its hiring FAQ says some roles require an assessment, with instructions sent by email or given by a talent acquisition partner. It says an unsuccessful candidate is generally eligible to retake the same assessment after six months. The bank does not name an assessment vendor or describe the content on these pages.

The application process page for student programs is organised by region. For the US and Canada, first-round and second-round interviews may take place by phone, on-demand video, on campus or at an office. In the on-demand format you have 30 seconds to prepare and up to three minutes to respond, and the questions are described as primarily behavioral and open ended. The bank says notes are acceptable as long as you do not read a script.

For Europe, the Middle East and Africa, most applications consist of a CV, competency questions and a video interview, all due by the deadline. The Asia Pacific section is the only one that names the provider, telling candidates to use the practice time "to get accustomed to the HireVue platform." We found no statement about AI or outside help on the Bank of America pages we read.

What does Wells Fargo publish about assessments and its On-Demand Screen?

Wells Fargo's hiring process page lists five steps: get started, apply, review, interview and consider an offer.

Its FAQ says job screening assessments are required "for a small number of job types", and that instructions arrive by email. An assessment outcome is generally valid for six months, and any other requisition that uses the same assessment reuses that outcome during the period. Wells Fargo does not publish the content, length or vendor of these assessments.

The recorded stage is called an On-Demand Screen, which the FAQ defines as "a type of preliminary interview where applicants record video responses to pre-set questions." A third-party vendor emails the instructions, and the vendor is not named.

For preparation, Wells Fargo publishes a guide to behavioral-based interviews. It recommends the situation, behavior and outcome method, which it says was formerly known as the STAR method. We found no statement about AI or outside help on the Wells Fargo pages we read.

What does Capital One publish about assessments and Power Day?

Capital One's guide to what to expect in its interviews says that after applying you may be asked to complete an automated assessment of "job-related skills like communication, customer focus, leadership and problem solving." Depending on the position, the early steps can also include an hour-long virtual exam and a phone interview with the hiring manager.

Its candidate FAQ describes one assessment by name, the Virtual Job Tryout. It combines modules called Manage Relationships, Work Your Business Case, Tell Us Your Story and Describe Your Approach, and it takes 20 to 45 minutes on average. A separate page for students says an online assessment is required for the analyst, technology and machine learning development programs.

For AI and machine learning roles, a Capital One recruiting article describes an algorithmic coding assessment of 70 minutes with four questions on data structures and algorithms. It says the assessment is pass or fail and is taken in CodeSignal, which our guide to the CodeSignal assessment explains. We could not confirm from an official page that other technology roles use the same test.

Power Day is the last step, and Capital One describes it as "a series of interviews about you and the skills and insights you bring to your work." The interviews may be job fit, behavioral, case or technical, depending on the role. For AI and machine learning roles the article describes four hour-long interviews covering coding, system design, behavioral questions and a case study. For business analysts, another article describes a mini case interview followed by a virtual Power Day with two to three case interviews and a product strategy conversation. We found no statement about candidates' use of AI on the Capital One pages we read.

What do the four banks have in common?

The four sets of pages share three points when read side by side.

  • Every bank says assessments apply to certain roles and that the invitation carries the instructions.
  • JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Wells Fargo all describe recorded video answers to pre-set questions.
  • Bank of America and Wells Fargo both publish a waiting period or validity period of six months for assessments.

Recorded one-way interviews are covered in our article on whether HireVue can detect an interview copilot and on our HireVue page. If your invitation mentions games or aptitude tests, our guide to the types of online assessment test explains those formats. Our guide to Big Four online assessments covers the same stage at professional services firms.

How does Verve AI help with bank interviews?

The interviews after screening are behavioral, technical or case-based, and the banks describe questions about your real experience. Verve AI's mock interviews are spoken sessions with an AI interviewer, built from the job description, a question bank or your own questions, and each ends with a report. Verve AI also builds answers from your resume and your own stories in STAR format, the structure that Wells Fargo and Capital One both refer to.

Verve AI is also a real-time interview copilot for interviews held by video or phone. It gives three ways to get help that share one conversation context: automatic answers from the live audio, a built-in chatbot for typed questions, and a hotkey that captures part of the screen. It keeps the context of the whole conversation, so follow-up questions are answered in light of earlier questions and your own answers. Its suggestions are prompts for answers given in your own words.

One published rule needs restating plainly, which is that JPMorgan Chase tells candidates not to use software to generate answers while interviewing unless they are invited to use an LLM. With that bank, Verve AI belongs in preparation. The other three banks publish no AI rule on the pages we read, which means the instructions in your invitation decide, and you should follow them. You can start on Verve AI's free plan to rehearse before the first interview.

FAQ

Does every applicant take a bank online assessment?

A bank online assessment is required only for certain roles at all four banks. Wells Fargo says assessments apply to a small number of job types, Bank of America says some roles require one, and JPMorgan Chase says candidates are notified when their role requires one. Capital One says applicants may be asked to complete an automated assessment after applying.

Which banks use HireVue for recorded video interviews?

JPMorgan Chase's early careers handbook says its first round is a recorded virtual interview hosted over HireVue and/or HackerRank. Bank of America names the HireVue platform in the Asia Pacific section of its student application page. Wells Fargo says a third-party vendor runs its On-Demand Screen without naming it, and Capital One names no video interview vendor.

What is Capital One's Power Day?

Capital One describes Power Day as the last step of its process, made up of a series of interviews. Capital One says the interviews can include job fit, behavioral, case and technical interviews depending on the role, and that they are held virtually with video on.

Do banks allow AI during interviews and assessments?

JPMorgan Chase tells early careers candidates not to use software to generate answers while interviewing, unless they are invited to use an LLM. Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Capital One publish no statement on candidates' use of AI on the pages we read, so candidates at those banks should follow the instructions in their invitation.
