Tell me about yourself in Hindi: what "अपने बारे में बताइए" asks, when to answer in Hindi or English, and three sample answers with Roman script.
"Tell me about yourself" in Hindi is commonly asked as "अपने बारे में बताइए" (apne baare mein bataiye) or, more formally, "अपना परिचय दीजिए" (apna parichay dijiye). Both ask for a short professional introduction, not your life story: what you do now, what earlier experience matters for this job, and why you want this role. Keep it to about a minute, answer in the language the interviewer is using, and let English words like project and client come in naturally. For the English version, see our main guide to answering "tell me about yourself".
What the interviewer is listening for
"परिचय" simply means introduction, so the formal and casual phrasings ask for the same thing. The interviewer usually has your résumé in front of them, so this is your chance to show which parts of it you think matter for this job and to say so in an organised way. Everything you mention becomes a likely follow-up, so name only the projects and skills you are happy to be questioned on.
Hindi or English: which language to answer in
The safe rule is to answer in the language the question was asked in and to follow the interviewer if they switch, so an interview that opens in English stays in English unless the interviewer moves into Hindi or Hinglish. Many Indian professionals mix Hindi and English when they talk about work, so if that is how you normally speak, keep technical terms such as deployment in English.
If you would rather answer in Hindi in an interview that began in English, ask once: "क्या मैं यह हिंदी में बता सकता हूँ?" (Kya main yeh Hindi mein bata sakta hoon?), or "सकती" (sakti) if you are a woman. If they prefer English, or reply in English, finish your sentence and continue in English without apologising.
A present, past and future structure that works in both languages
A widely shared structure, credited to The Muse, has three parts, and the Hindi connecting phrases for each are short and natural:
- For the present, open with "फ़िलहाल मैं ... के तौर पर काम कर रहा/रही हूँ" (filhaal main ... ke taur par kaam kar raha/rahi hoon) and name one recent piece of work.
- For the past, bridge with "इससे पहले मैंने ..." (isse pehle maine ...) and keep only the experience that explains why you fit.
- For the future, close with "अब मैं ऐसा role ढूँढ रहा/रही हूँ जहाँ ..." (ab main aisa role dhoondh raha/rahi hoon jahan ...) and tie it to the job description.
The order can flex: a fresher's "present" is the degree just finished, and someone returning from a break sounds better starting with the past, as the third sample shows. Insight Global, a staffing firm, suggests staying within two minutes, and we recommend 60 to 90 seconds.
Three illustrative sample answers in Hindi
These are illustrative examples with invented details, in the spoken Hindi of an Indian office. Each takes about a minute to say, so swap in your own details and learn the points, not the words.
Sample 1: Fresher graduate applying for a trainee role
Ji, dhanyavaad. Mera naam Ankit hai. Maine isi saal Indore ke ek engineering college se Computer Science mein B.Tech poora kiya hai. Final year mein maine apni team ke saath ek attendance app banaya, jiska backend maine Java aur MySQL mein likha tha. College mein main coding club ka coordinator bhi tha, to workshops organise karne ka experience bhi mila. Ab main aisi company mein career shuru karna chahta hoon jahan proper training mile aur real projects par seekhne ka mauka mile, isiliye yeh Graduate Engineer Trainee role mujhe sahi lagta hai.
Every sentence gives the interviewer something to ask about, with no filler such as school marks or hobbies. Our fresher self-introduction scripts have more English versions for campus drives.
Sample 2: About three years in IT services
Ji, zaroor. Main pichhle teen saal se Pune ki ek mid-sized IT services company mein software engineer ke taur par kaam kar rahi hoon. Abhi main ek banking client ke project par hoon, jahan hamari team Java aur Spring Boot mein payments se judi services banati hai. Pichhle saal maine ek reporting module ki release sambhali thi, client se requirements samajhne se lekar testing team ke saath coordination tak. Company join karne se pehle maine Electronics mein B.E. kiya tha. Shuruaat support tickets se hui, phir dheere-dheere main development mein aa gayi. Ab main aisa role dhoondh rahi hoon jahan main design ke faislon mein zyada hissa le sakoon. Aapki job description mein microservices aur client ke saath seedha kaam, donon hain, isliye yeh role mujhe sahi agla kadam lagta hai.
In English, it opens: "For the past three years I have been working as a software engineer at a mid-sized IT services company in Pune, and right now I am on a banking client's payments project." The release she owned is the strongest line because it invites a follow-up she can answer, and the last sentence must be rewritten for each job description.
Sample 3: Returning after a career break
Ji, dhanyavaad. Maine lagbhag chaar saal ek manufacturing company ke accounts department mein kaam kiya, jahan main vendor payments, GST filing aur monthly reconciliation sambhalti thi. Break ke aakhiri chhah mahinon mein maine Excel aur Power BI ka ek online course kiya, aur apni purani company ke liye part-time kuch reports bhi banaayin. Ab main full-time kaam par lautne ke liye poori tarah taiyaar hoon. Yeh finance operations role mujhe isliye achha laga, kyonki ismein mera accounts ka experience bhi kaam aayega aur reporting ki nayi skills bhi.
The break gets one neutral sentence and no apology, and opening with four years of experience means the first thing the interviewer hears is what she can do.
Say this, not this: four common mistakes
Reciting the résumé from Class 10
Not this: "मैंने दसवीं 82% से पास की, फिर बारहवीं…" Say this: "मैंने इसी साल Computer Science में B.Tech पूरा किया है" (Maine isi saal Computer Science mein B.Tech poora kiya hai). The interviewer can read your marks, so spend the minute on what is not on paper.
Family background and a list of hobbies
Not this: "मेरे पिताजी government job में हैं और मेरी hobbies cricket और music हैं।" Insight Global's guide advises against rambling about personal details of your life story or unrelated experiences, so keep personal information to one line that connects to the role.
Memorised English that breaks under follow-up
A line like "I am a dynamic, result-oriented professional" sounds polished until the interviewer asks what exactly you did on that project. A Cornell University career office advises against learning your response word for word, so memorise three points instead and use short plain sentences you can defend.
Textbook Hindi that sounds like a speech
Not this: "मैं एक कर्मठ, ऊर्जावान एवं परिश्रमी अभियंता हूँ।" Say this: "मैं software engineer हूँ और पिछले तीन साल से banking projects पर काम कर रहा हूँ" (Main software engineer hoon aur pichhle teen saal se banking projects par kaam kar raha hoon). Everyday office Hindi makes you sound like a future colleague, not a speaker on a stage.

FAQ
What does "tell me about yourself" mean in Hindi?
It is usually asked as "अपने बारे में बताइए" (apne baare mein bataiye) or, more formally, "अपना परिचय दीजिए" (apna parichay dijiye). Both ask for a short professional introduction: what you do now, what relevant experience brought you here and why you want this role, not your family background or life story. Treat it as your chance to choose where the conversation starts.
Should I answer in Hindi or English?
Answer in the language the interviewer used, and follow them if they switch. If an interview starts in English, stay in English unless the interviewer moves into Hindi or Hinglish. If you prefer Hindi, ask once politely and accept the answer.
Is it okay to mix Hindi and English in an interview?
Yes, many Indian professionals mix Hindi and English at work, and technical words like project, deployment or client are often left in English. If the interviewer speaks Hinglish, you can too. If they keep to formal English, keep your answer in English.
