How the Mercor AI interview works: where it fits in an application, the format, waiting-room checks, scoring, retakes and what comes next.

The Mercor AI interview is the step that surprises most applicants, because nothing in an ordinary job search prepares you for a twenty-minute spoken conversation with software. The invitation says little about what will be asked, how long you have or who will see the result, and the answers are spread across a dozen pages of Mercor's help center.

What is the Mercor AI interview?

The Mercor AI interview is a recorded, spoken interview in which an AI interviewer asks questions specific to a role, transcribes your answers and evaluates them for the listing. Mercor describes it as its standard and only method of screening, so there is no version by phone, chat or with a human interviewer.

Mercor connects experts and contractors with companies that are building AI, and it screens far more applicants than people could interview. The AI interview is how it does that consistently, which is also why one interview can count for many roles.

Where does the interview fit in a Mercor application?

A Mercor application is a checklist, and the interview is one item on it. Depending on the role, the list can include uploading a resume, confirming work authorization, the AI interview and a written assessment, and Mercor's application guide says the steps can be completed in any order.

Completed steps are shared across your applications and do not expire. Once you have taken a particular interview, every later application that needs the same one shows it as done, and you may find applications marked ready to submit that you never started. Nothing is reviewed until you press Submit, and a submitted application cannot be edited afterwards, so it is worth updating your resume before you submit and not after.

What is the format of the Mercor AI interview?

Most Mercor interviews take about twenty minutes, and some run shorter or longer. You speak with the AI interviewer through your camera and microphone, with captions switched on by default, and the conversation is in English unless the listing says otherwise.

The questions are generated from your resume and the job description, so two candidates for the same role do not hear the same interview. Mercor describes two broad kinds: some interviews are technical and go deep into your previous experience, and others test language or reasoning. Some include a whiteboard, whose contents save automatically, and some ask you to share your screen.

The interviewer behaves like a slightly impatient person. If you pause for a long time it may step in, and you are allowed to tell it you had not finished or to ask it to repeat or clarify a question.

What happens in the waiting room?

Before the interview starts you land in a waiting room with a list of setup checks. Two can block you from starting: a working microphone, which you test by reading a phrase aloud, and a screen share, which appears only when the interview needs one and has to be your entire screen. The others, covering your face being in frame, the lighting and the camera, are there to help the recording and do not hold you back.

The waiting room is also where Mercor reminds you that retakes are meant for technical problems. If the Start button stays grey, one of the required checks has not passed, and the message under the button says which.

What do you need to take it?

The interview runs in a browser on a computer. Mercor recommends the latest Chrome, supports Edge and Safari, and does not support Firefox or mobile browsers. You need a working camera and microphone, a quiet room and a stable connection, and Mercor suggests headphones and an external microphone.

You can also have a pen and paper beside you, and a calculator if the role calls for one. You do not have to take the interview the moment you apply, so pick a time when you will not be interrupted.

Can you practice before the real interview?

Mercor provides a practice interview, and it is the most useful thing on the platform for a first-time candidate. It is free, it can be taken as many times as you like, it is not tied to any application and it is not shared with companies.

Use it to learn how the interviewer handles pauses and to find problems with your microphone or camera. How is the interview evaluated, and who sees it?

Mercor's AI evaluates the transcript of your answers against the listing, and the scoring and weighting can differ from one role to another even when the interview is the same. The result feeds Mercor's matching system together with your resume, and the recording and transcript are available to hiring managers at the companies considering you.

Mercor does not share scores or detailed feedback with candidates, and you cannot download your own recording. It also gives no fixed timeline for hearing back; you are notified when an application moves. Can you retake the Mercor AI interview?

You can retake an interview up to three times, as our guide to retaking or resetting a Mercor AI interview explains, and the limit is shared across every application that uses that interview. You start a retake yourself from the Assessments tab, only your most recent attempt is considered, and retaking resets the progress of the application.

Mercor tells candidates that hiring managers can see how many retakes they have used. The practice interview does not count, which is another reason to use it first.

What happens after the Mercor AI interview?

Passing the interview makes you eligible for roles and does not by itself produce an offer. From there, the usual steps run in the following order.

1. You submit the application, or Mercor's matching surfaces your profile to a company without one, which it calls an instant offer.
2. Some roles add a written assessment, and some send a paid work trial, of which each person can be paid for one.
3. An offer leads to identity verification with a government ID and a short selfie video, and then to a background check.
4. You sign the contract and are onboarded to the project.
