HCLTech Interview Process: AMP Tests, Interview Rounds and Prep

HCLTech interview process: the five official steps, the AMP Ascend test stages, technical and HR interviews, and fraud checks.

The HCLTech interview process confuses candidates for a simple reason, which is that the company runs two quite different routes under one name. A fresh engineering graduate goes through a named program with three tests before any interview, while an experienced professional applies to a posting and may never sit a test at all, and advice written for one group is often read by the other.

We wrote this for final-year students, recent graduates and experienced professionals who want to know what HCLTech itself says about how it selects people. It covers the five steps HCLTech lists for every applicant, the AMP program and its Ascend test for fresh engineers, the interview rounds, the company's recruitment fraud warning, the offer stage, and how to prepare. We make Verve AI, an interview copilot, and what we say about HCLTech comes from its own careers pages as they stood in October 2026.

In short, HCLTech publishes more than most of its peers. It names the stages of its fresher test, gives approximate timings and a qualifying language score, and states the pay attached to each tier, while leaving question counts and cut-offs for the other tests unpublished.

Who is this guide for?

HCLTech's campus hiring page speaks to people at the start of their careers, and it sorts them by qualification. It describes Graduate Engineer Trainee roles for engineering graduates, roles for MBA and PGDM graduates, Graduate Trainee roles that need no technology expertise, and specialised hiring for freshers with chartered accountancy, law or doctoral degrees.

Experienced professionals use the main careers site and the general recruitment process described below. The two routes share the same final interviews and the same fraud rules, but only the fresher route has a published test structure. If you still know the company as HCL, its campus FAQ explains that HCLTech has been the brand name of HCL Technologies since September 2022.

What are the five steps in the HCLTech interview process?

HCLTech's recruitment process page sets out the same sequence for all roles.

  1. You search the careers section and apply for the job that matches your skills.
  2. You submit a resume with complete credentials and detailed information about your experience.
  3. A recruiter or technical panel screens the application and contacts you if your credentials match the requirement.
  4. You attend a technical interview and then an HR interview.
  5. If you are successful, HCLTech rolls out an offer with the compensation structure and employment terms.

The fraud notice adds a useful detail about the fourth step. HCLTech says its hiring process involves at least two rounds of interviews, which may be virtual or in person.

What is the AMP program for fresh engineering graduates?

AMP stands for Ascend, Momentum and Polaris, and HCLTech's campus hiring page calls it a meritocratic selection process for fresh engineering graduates, in which skills decide the salary. It is open to candidates hired on campus and off campus, provided they meet the minimum criteria.

Every candidate who clears the selection process receives an offer under Ascend. The top 10 percent of Ascend candidates are evaluated further through additional interviews, hackathons or technical tests, and based on performance and ranking they may be upgraded to the Momentum or Polaris tracks. HCLTech publishes the package for each track on its campus page, and those figures can change from one hiring cycle to the next.

The minimum academic requirement is also published, and HCLTech asks for 70 percent or above throughout Class 10, Class 12 and graduation, or 65 percent for candidates applying to the four New Vistas locations. The engineering eligibility it lists is a bachelor's or master's degree in engineering (B.E./B.Tech or M.E./M.Tech).

What does the Ascend test include?

HCLTech says the Ascend test has three stages, and it gives a short description of each.

  • The Cognitive Test covers numerical, verbal and reasoning questions and takes about 90 minutes.
  • The Coding Test or Technical Test takes 60 to 90 minutes.
  • The Versant Test assesses English speaking and listening, and a score of 46 to 56 at B1 level is required to qualify.

Only candidates who clear the cognitive and coding tests go on to the Versant Test. Those who complete all three move forward to the technical and HR interviews.

That is everything HCLTech publishes about the test. It does not state the number of questions, the programming languages offered, the testing platform, the pass marks for the cognitive and coding stages, or whether the test is proctored. Those details vary by hiring cycle and arrive with your test invitation, so treat any precise figure you read elsewhere with caution.

HCLTech also describes training linked to AMP, in which students at partner colleges called Primus Campuses follow an industry-aligned curriculum before the assessments. Candidates hired from other colleges or through off-campus drives must complete pre-joining training and clear a post-training assessment, which can lead to an upgraded offer.

What happens in the technical and HR interviews?

HCLTech describes the technical interview as an opportunity to exhibit your technical skills. It says the questions range across disciplines and may include puzzles, problems and other out-of-the-box questions. It does not publish a syllabus or sample questions, so the role description and your own project work are the best indication of what will be discussed.

The HR interview is described as a chance for both sides to get to know each other. HCLTech says it tries to understand your career goals, skills, strengths and passion, and it invites you to ask the recruiter anything about the position or the company.

The same page gives practical advice that suits an in-person interview. HCLTech suggests bringing multiple copies of your resume, arriving at least fifteen minutes early, and asking about the main responsibilities of the position.

HCLTech does not name a video platform for virtual rounds. If your invitation names one, our setup guides for Microsoft Teams and Google Meet explain how an interview copilot runs on each.

How do you apply, and how does HCLTech warn about fraud?

Experienced candidates apply through the careers section of the HCLTech website. Freshers register on a separate campus portal, which is where campus hiring cycles are announced.

HCLTech's page on fraudulent job offers states that it never charges or accepts any fee, amount or deposit from job seekers. The campus FAQ adds that it charges nothing for hiring or for background verification. It recommends the following checks to anyone contacted about a job.

  • HCLTech will not request an interview on any instant-messaging application.
  • The recruitment team writes from addresses at @hcl.com or @hcltech.com, although HCLTech warns that scammers can fake a displayed address.
  • HCLTech will not ask for a bank account number, tax details, a recruitment fee or a security deposit during selection.
  • A genuine offer is opened through the Candidate Portal with a unique ID and password supplied to the candidate.

A suspected fake offer letter can be reported to foi@hcltech.com.

How should you prepare for HCLTech?

Preparation for the HCLTech interview process depends on your route, and the company's own pages suggest the order.

  1. Check your eligibility against the published academic percentages before you register for AMP.
  2. Practise numerical, verbal and reasoning questions under time pressure for the cognitive stage.
  3. Practise coding problems in a language you know well, since HCLTech does not publish a language list.
  4. Practise spoken English and listening, because the Versant stage has a stated qualifying score.
  5. Research the company, including its history and recent news, which is the first tip HCLTech gives for interviews.

Our article on types of online assessment test explains how cognitive tests of this kind are usually structured. If you are comparing employers, our guide to the Wipro interview process covers a company that publishes far less about its tests.

How can Verve AI help with HCLTech interviews?

HCLTech tells every candidate to expect a technical interview and an HR interview, and both can be rehearsed aloud. Verve AI's mock interviews are spoken sessions with an AI interviewer, built from a question bank, your own questions or the job description, and each ends with a report. The question bank holds more than 5,000 real interview questions across technical and behavioral topics.

For rounds held by video or phone, Verve AI works as a real-time copilot with three ways to get help that share one conversation context. It answers automatically from the live audio, it includes a chatbot for typed questions, and a hotkey captures part of the screen. Because it keeps the whole conversation in context, a follow-up such as why you chose a particular approach is answered in light of what you already said. Its suggestions draw on your resume and your own STAR stories, and they are prompts for answers given in your own words. Engineering candidates can read more on the software engineer interview copilot page.

HCLTech's pages do not state a rule on AI tools, so follow the instructions in your own test and interview invitations. You can start on Verve AI's free plan and use its five mock interviews before your technical round.
