micro1 Jobs: How the Pay Works and Whether It's Legit

What micro1 jobs involve, how pay moves through Deel twice a month, the rate ranges on 278 live listings, and what to check before you sign.

micro1 is a real company that signs contracts with experts and pays them, so the work is legitimate, but it is not dependable income. Most micro1 expert jobs are part-time, remote contracts in which you create, review or record data used to train AI models, paid in US dollars through Deel twice a month. The risks sit in the details: passing the AI interview does not guarantee a placement, pipelines can end with little notice, and your contract's pay type can differ from the listing. This page explains how the work and the money flow, using micro1's own documentation and its live listings on 25 October 2026.

Once the interview is done, our guide to micro1 interview results and what each status means explains what happens next and what you can do while you wait.

If you are preparing for micro1's AI interviewer instead, our guide to how the micro1 Zara AI interview works covers the format, scoring and proctoring.

What micro1 work actually is

micro1's homepage calls it a data lab to train frontier models and evaluate agents. Its expert handbook names three kinds of work: frontier evaluations for foundation models, real-world robotics data recorded by contributors, and contextual evaluations built around a specific company's workflows. Day to day, that usually means writing responses that show reasoning, comparing AI outputs, annotating data and following detailed guidelines.

The listings show how wide the range is. A Generalist role posted on 23 October 2026 asks contractors to run real online workflows with AI tools, including purchases made with a personal card and reimbursed later. A Mathematics Expert role posted a day earlier involves solving and validating computational problems in Python, while a video role for Latin America pays you to film your own household chores with a phone on a head strap.

micro1's FAQ describes a part-time commitment of about 15 to 20 hours a week, says you may keep a full-time job, and requires you to use your own laptop. micro1's FAQ says the client's name is shared only after successful onboarding, so you may not know which AI company the work serves until then.

From application to your first paid task

You apply on micro1's Opportunities Portal and take a recorded interview with Zara, micro1's AI recruiter, which lasts 20 to 40 minutes depending on how many skills are assessed. Once you pass the interview and complete ID verification, you join micro1's vetted talent pool, but micro1 says plainly that the "Hiring manager reviewing" status, which can last up to 30 days, does not guarantee placement. Some one-star Trustpilot reviews describe applicants stalling at this stage, and our micro1 interview preparation guide covers how to prepare for the interview itself.

Before you join that pool you verify your identity by scanning an original physical ID through a third-party provider, and if you are then selected for a pipeline you receive onboarding instructions with a services agreement, sign it in Deel and complete Deel's KYC check, without which payments cannot be processed. micro1's FAQ calls a KarmaCheck background check a mandatory part of onboarding, and onboarding also gives you Slack access, a micro1 expert email, platform credentials and, for hourly contracts, the Hubstaff time tracker.

Paid work may still not start at once. micro1's pipeline guide says you first review instructions and training material, and some pipelines require quizzes, test tasks or another vetting step before real tasks begin. Ask your pipeline lead whether that time is billable before you put hours into it.

How micro1 pay works

micro1's FAQ describes three payout structures, and the one in your contract decides what a week of effort is worth.

  • Hourly contracts pay for the hours you track in Hubstaff that the project team approves.
  • Pay-per-task contracts pay for each approved task at your hourly rate multiplied by a "Project Payout Multiple", however long the task actually took.
  • Flat-fee contracts pay a fixed amount per approved task, and rejected or incomplete submissions earn nothing.

The multiple or flat fee appears under "special clauses" in the contract. Hubstaff hours do not show in Deel as you work; micro1 exports them at the end of each cycle and the total appears on your Deel invoice. Tasks typically pass peer review and sometimes client review, so approval, not effort, is what gets paid.

The money follows a semi-monthly cycle in Pacific time. Work from the 1st to the 15th is paid around the 20th, and work from the 16th to the month's end is paid around the 5th, with approvals landing a couple of days earlier. micro1 warns that the approval email arrives before the money, that US contractors may wait an extra business day, and that weekend or US holiday dates move to the next business day.

You are engaged as an independent contractor, so your taxes, insurance and benefits are your own responsibility. Where a US tax form such as Form 1099-NEC is issued, you download it from Deel.

What the listings say about rates

We read micro1's Opportunities Portal on 25 October 2026. It listed 278 roles, 271 with an hourly range, running from $6 an hour for an at-home video recording role in Latin America to $140–$400 for licensed attorney roles such as an Immigration Attorney listing posted on 22 October. Sixty-two listings started at $100 an hour or more, while 24 started below $20.

These are listings we opened that day, with the range shown at the top of each page.

  • The Generalist role posted on 23 October 2026 showed $30–$49 an hour for US-based contractors.
  • The AI Agent Tester role posted on 24 October 2026 showed $25–$45 an hour, with about 1.5 hours per test run.
  • The Gujarati Transcription Expert role showed $8–$12 an hour.
  • The Mathematics Expert role posted on 22 October 2026 showed $60–$120 an hour.

Two patterns matter more than the headline numbers. In 136 of the 271 listings, the top of the range was at least double the bottom, so a listing shows a band rather than your rate. The header and description can also disagree: the Mathematics Expert listing shows $60–$120, says "Pay: $80–$120/hour" in its text, and then explains that pay is per task meeting specifications, with minimum submission requirements.

Some roles also ask you to spend money first. The AI Agent Tester role requires a paid-tier personal AI assistant account and a card for test purchases that are reimbursed afterwards. The video role pays $20, described as a signing bonus and reimbursement for the head strap you buy, only after 20 hours of work.

Is micro1 legit?

On whether micro1 is a scam, the evidence says no. It publishes a detailed handbook, issues contracts through Deel, runs a documented payroll schedule, and had a claimed Trustpilot profile with 10,997 reviews and a 4.7 score on 25 October 2026. An Annotation Academy analysis updated 12 October 2026, covering Reddit discussion from December 2024 to July 2026, found that placed contributors reported being paid on time.

Whether it is reliable is a harder question. Trustpilot notes that micro1 asks people to review it and has not replied to negative reviews, and most recent five-star reviews describe the Zara interview rather than months of paid work. Several one-star reviews from October 2026 describe long waits or rejection with no placement, a signed contract followed by no hours, and disorganised onboarding that ended in termination, alongside complaints about unresponsive support and the AI interview itself. Annotation Academy found related themes on Reddit, including hourly roles restructured as pay-per-task, uneven work volume once placed, and offboarding without explanation.

micro1's own agreement leaves room for some of this. Its summary says micro1 may end the agreement immediately on written notice while you must give five business days, that roles last only while the client has work, and that disputes go to binding JAMS arbitration with no jury trial or class action. Anything you create in connection with your services belongs to the company, and you must confirm you are not currently employed by a foundation-model company.

Our reading, from a decade in recruiting, is that micro1 is a legitimate business whose model puts most of the uncertainty on the contractor. It suits someone who wants flexible, well-paid hours in their specialism and can absorb a month with no work, and it fits poorly if you need predictable income. Mercor, the closest comparison, pays its hourly contracts weekly, as our guide to Mercor jobs explains.

What to check before you accept

Some of the problems people report, such as a pay type or rate that differs from the listing, can be spotted in the contract or onboarding emails, so these checks take minutes.

  • Confirm whether the contract is hourly, pay-per-task or flat-fee, and read the multiple or fee under "special clauses".
  • Compare the rate in your contract with the listing, because the listing's range is a band and not an offer.
  • Ask whether onboarding, training and qualification tasks are billable, since micro1 says what counts as billable in Hubstaff is set in each pipeline's own documentation.
  • Note any money you must spend first and the condition attached to its reimbursement.
  • Make sure the contract arrives through Deel and your payroll details sit on payroll.micro1.ai, and treat any request for a fee to join or be placed as a warning sign, because none of the onboarding steps in micro1's library mentions one.
  • Budget as if the pipeline could end next week, because micro1 promises only to try to move you to a similar pipeline if one exists.

Practising for the Zara interview

The Zara interview is the main way into micro1 work, and because it is spoken, clear, structured answers in your specialism help. micro1's candidate terms require you to answer "without any third-party assistance, except where explicitly permitted by your interviewer or the interview instructions", so preparation has to happen beforehand. Verve AI's AI Mock Interview lets you practise with an AI recruiter using question banks for your field, or questions generated from a job description through the LinkedIn Mock Interview tool, and each session ends with a detailed performance report with personalized feedback and scoring.

FAQ

Is micro1 legit or a scam?

micro1 is a legitimate company that issues contracts through Deel and pays contractors on a published semi-monthly schedule. Placed contributors who discussed it on Reddit reported being paid on time, according to one October 2026 analysis. The common complaints are long waits after the interview, contracts with no hours and projects ending abruptly, and micro1's agreement lets it end work immediately and says roles last only while the client has work. Treat it as real but unpredictable work.

How much do micro1 jobs pay?

Pay depends on the role, and on 25 October 2026 the portal showed hourly ranges from $6 to $400. Of the 271 listings with a range, 24 started below $20 an hour and 62 started at $100 or more. Some roles pay per approved task rather than per hour, so the rate and payout structure in your contract matter more than the listing.

How and when does micro1 pay contractors?

micro1 pays in US dollars through Deel twice a month. Work from the 1st to the 15th is paid around the 20th, and work from the 16th to the month's end around the 5th of the next month. Approval emails arrive a few days before the money, and US contractors may wait an extra business day.

Is micro1 a full-time job?

micro1's FAQ describes the work as a part-time engagement of about 15 to 20 hours a week and says you can keep a full-time job alongside it. Projects last only as long as the client has work. micro1 also lists some full-time roles and internships on its Opportunities Portal.
