micro1 Zara AI Interview: How It Works and What It Monitors

How the micro1 Zara AI interview works: structure, scoring, what is recorded, how proctoring flags AI answers, and how to prepare.

The micro1 Zara AI interview is the first step for a growing number of remote roles, and for most candidates it is also the first time they have been interviewed by software. An invitation arrives with a link, a time estimate and very little else, which leaves people guessing how the conversation runs, how it is scored and how closely they are being watched.

We wrote this for candidates who have been invited to an interview with Zara, whether for micro1's own expert network or for a company that uses it to screen applicants. It explains how the interview is structured, what Zara evaluates, what is recorded, how its proctoring works when an employer turns it on, and how to prepare, including where an interview copilot such as Verve AI fits. We make Verve AI, and what we say about micro1 comes from its own help documentation and candidate terms as they stood in October 2026.

What is the micro1 Zara AI interview?

Zara is micro1's AI recruiter, and it runs a spoken interview in real time, asks open-ended questions, listens to your answers and produces a scored report, with a person reviewing the result before a final decision.

Candidates meet it in one of two ways. Everyone who applies to micro1's own network of experts for AI training work is interviewed by Zara. Other companies also use Zara to screen their applicants, and those employers decide how the interview is built, including which skills it covers and whether proctoring is on.

How is a Zara interview structured?

A Zara interview is assembled from blocks, and its length follows from them. For micro1's expert applicants it runs between 20 and 40 minutes, at roughly seven minutes for each skill being assessed. Employers building their own interviews get about five minutes per skill, one to four minutes for each custom question, and up to 25 minutes for a coding exercise.

The two kinds of question behave differently, and it helps to know which you are answering.

  • Skill questions adapt to you. Zara chooses and adjusts them according to how the interview is going, and it asks you to explain your reasoning, so a thin answer tends to bring a follow-up.
  • Custom questions are read exactly as the employer wrote them. Zara does not rephrase or follow up, you get a single opportunity to answer, and it moves on when you finish or the time runs out.

Some interviews add a coding exercise in a browser editor that supports the common languages, or a task specific to the role, such as a data annotation exercise.

Language is handled strictly, in that the employer sets the interview language or lets you choose at the start, and micro1's documentation says languages cannot be mixed within an interview and that switching partway may lower your score.

What does Zara evaluate?

Every interview is scored on more than the technical content. Zara rates soft skills, which it lists as critical thinking, listening and empathy, clarity of communication and composure, and it rates language proficiency on grammar, vocabulary and fluency, with each one marked average, good or excellent.

Those ratings feed an overall match score from 0 to 100, together with your resume, your answers on each skill and any exercise. Employers can change how the parts are weighted, so the same performance can score differently for different roles. Answers to custom questions are graded against an ideal answer that the employer may have written and that you do not see.

What does Zara record?

micro1's candidate terms ask you to consent to the recording of your answers, audio, video and interactions with the platform. The report an employer receives includes the full video with a transcript that can be clicked through, along with the scores, and it can be downloaded or shared by link.

For technical exercises, the privacy notice also mentions recordings of your screen share. Identity verification is a separate step after the interview for micro1's own experts, using a government ID and a selfie.

How does Zara's proctoring work?

Proctoring is a setting the employer turns on, for one interview or across an account, and micro1's proctoring documentation describes what changes when it is on. You must share your entire screen, keep your webcam on throughout and use only one screen. When the employer enforces it, connecting a second monitor, stopping the screen share or turning off the webcam suspends the interview until you put things back.

During a proctored interview Zara monitors and logs your environment and actions, and the data is analyzed afterwards by a proctoring model. Each proctored interview receives a Proctoring Score with a breakdown of the behaviors that were flagged, and the documentation says Zara also detects whether responses are likely to be AI-generated and alerts the employer. The tactics it names as targets are multiple screens, mobile devices, off-screen help and AI assistants.

micro1 states that its proctoring model has a 93% success rate in detecting cheating. It has not published how that figure was measured. The score goes to the employer as information, and micro1's documentation does not describe an automatic rejection.

What are the rules for candidates?

micro1's candidate terms require that your answers are your own original work, given without third-party assistance unless it has been explicitly permitted, and they treat the content of the interview as confidential. A violation can lead to loss of access to the platform, and micro1 says it may report violations to prospective employers.

Its preparation advice is ordinary and worth following: use a quiet, well-lit room, close applications and tabs you do not need, and keep your face centered in the camera.

What happens after the interview?

For micro1's expert applicants, a result on whether you met the certification criteria comes quickly, after which an application can sit under review for up to 48 hours and with a hiring manager for up to 30 days. Passing leads to profile completion and identity verification, and certification does not by itself guarantee a placement.

Two things soften a poor result, the first being that candidates who do not qualify can ask for detailed feedback by email. The second is that skills that have been certified are reused, so a later application may skip the interview or shorten it. micro1 does not publish a retake limit or a waiting period.

If something breaks during the interview, a "Having Trouble?" button in the corner opens guided fixes for the camera, microphone and connection.

How should you prepare for a Zara interview?

The format rewards a few specific habits, and each one follows from how Zara scores.

  • Practice answering aloud, because clarity and composure are scored in every interview and they are difficult to produce cold.
  • Explain your reasoning as you go, since the skill questions probe for it and a conclusion with no reasoning invites a follow-up.
  • Treat every custom question as final, giving a complete answer the first time, because there is no second attempt.
  • Stay in one language from start to finish.
  • Check your setup beforehand: Chrome, a stable connection, one screen if proctoring applies, and a computer with at least 8 GB of memory.

Rehearsal with an AI interviewer is the closest match to the real thing. Verve AI's mock interviews run as a spoken conversation with an AI interviewer, using questions drawn from the role you are applying for, and they finish with a report on your answers, so you can practice being scored by software before it counts. Five mock interviews are included in the free plan.

Can you use an interview copilot in a Zara interview?

It depends on how the employer has set the interview up, and you can tell from what you are asked to do at the start. An interview that asks for your entire screen, your webcam and a single monitor is proctored, and micro1's documentation is plain about what that mode is built to flag, which includes other screens, off-screen help and answers that look AI-generated, in an interview whose rules require your own work.

Without proctoring, the interview is still recorded in full and still scored on how clearly and naturally you speak. Verve AI's live copilot is designed for spoken interviews. It listens to the question, suggests a structure drawn from your resume, and keeps the context of the conversation, so its help with a follow-up builds on what you already said. Used as a prompt for answers given in your own words, that supports the things Zara scores, while reading a suggestion aloud works against them.

The Verve AI desktop app's Stealth Mode is guaranteed to be invisible when you share a window or tab on any platform and when you share your entire screen in the Zoom or Microsoft Teams desktop apps. Zara runs in a browser and asks for the entire screen when proctoring is on, so check your own setup with the steps in our guide to testing interview copilot stealth mode.

FAQ

How long is the micro1 Zara AI interview?

For micro1's own expert applicants, the Zara interview takes 20 to 40 minutes, at about seven minutes per skill. Interviews built by other employers vary, with about five minutes per skill, a few minutes per custom question and up to 25 minutes for a coding exercise.

Does Zara detect cheating?

When the employer enables proctoring, Zara requires your entire screen, your webcam and a single monitor, logs your actions, and produces a Proctoring Score with flagged behaviors. micro1's documentation says it also detects responses that are likely AI-generated and claims a 93% success rate, without publishing the method.

Can you retake a micro1 interview?

micro1 does not publish a retake limit or waiting period. Candidates who do not qualify can request feedback by email and apply to other roles, and skills that were certified earlier are reused, which can shorten or skip a later interview.

Does the Zara interview follow up on your answers?

Zara's skill questions adapt to how the interview is going and probe for your reasoning, so they can include follow-ups. Custom questions written by the employer do not adapt: they are read verbatim and you answer each one once.

What do employers see after a Zara interview?

Employers receive a report with an overall match score, ratings for each skill, soft-skill and language ratings, the full video with a transcript, and a Proctoring Score if proctoring was enabled. micro1 says a human evaluator reviews the assessment before a final decision.
